AWARDS

This is a new award programme that has been launched as part of the National Plan for Swimming.

The programme is aimed primarily at children from eight years old and above. the course, which has been designed by water safety specialists at RLSS UK, is designed to ensure that every child in the country has essential water skills to keep themselves safe and knowledge of what to do in an emergency. the programme features swimming and lifesaving skills supported by water safety education, allowing participants to enjoy swimming as an activity and, vitally, to protect their lives should an accident occur in or out of the water.

Lifesaving 1, 2 & 3

This is another award aimed at junior lifesavers and can be used as an interim award for those who have completed the Rookie Lifeguard programme and are too young to start for the Bronze Medallion award, or used in its own merit as base programme for elder children or adults.

Bronze Medallion

This is the flagship award for Lifesaving. The syllabus develops fitness, skill, judgement and knowledge, and the candidates will have the opportunity to achieve a vocationally recognised Life Support qualification as part of the award. the minimum age for this award is 13 years. Unless you hold Rookie Gold level 3 or Lifesaving 3 when this reduces to 12 years.

Award of Merit

This programme progress from the Bronze Medallion requiring candidates to demonstrate a higher level of fitness, skill, judgement and knowledge during simulated open water situations in a swimming pool. The minimum age for this award is 14 years. Candidates are to hold or have held a Bronze Medallion or Higher and a hold a current Life Support award.

Distinction

This award progresses from the Award of Merit requiring candidates to demonstrate excellence in fitness, skill, judgement, and knowledge during simulated open water situations in the swimming pool. The minimum age for this award is 14 years. Candidates are to hold or have held an Award of Merit and Silver Cross and hold a current Life Support award.

Bronze Cross

This award is the first senior open water award of the RLSS. The syllabus develops fitness, skill, judgement and knowledge specific to open water rescue and the assessment takes place in open water. The minimum age is 14 years. Candidates are to hold or have held a Bronze Medallion and hold a current Life Support award.

Silver Cross

This award progresses from the Bronze Cross. the syllabus trains a higher standard of fitness, skill, judgement and knowledge specific to open water rescue and the assessment takes place in open water.

Life Support

This award establishes an effective level of skill in Basic Life Support and the diagnosis of choking, bleeding and shock.

Life Support 3

This qualification establishes an excellent level of skill in Life Support for casualties of all ages and in the diagnosis and treatment of cessation of breathing, choking, bleeding and shock.

National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches

This qualification trains the practical Lifesaving skills that may be needed by anyone teaching or coaching swimming or another programmed activity in the pool. the qualification is endorsed by the ASA, the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management and the Institute of Swimming Teachers and Coaches. The minimum age is 16 years. This is not a Lifeguard qualification.
